CRASHED
A hard drive failed. I recovered part of the archive, but many of the files came back damaged or incomplete. CRASHED began with what the loss had made.
The files came back changed.
The portfolio began when a hard drive full of photographs failed. A recovery service could not retrieve the data, so I brought the drive home and kept working.
Recovery software brought back only part of the archive. Some photographs were intact. Many were incomplete, truncated, or unreadable.
Recovery became a way of making.
I wrote and tested scripts to copy, rewrite, combine, and preserve the damaged files. Horizontal lines, compressed fragments, and unexpected fields of color appeared as the code was reconstructed.
The photographs were not restored to what they had been. They became new images shaped by the failure and by the effort to retrieve them.
Time compressed inside the image.
Each photograph holds more than one moment: the original exposure, the loss of the file, and the process that made it visible again.
CRASHED grew into several related portfolios, including the Gray Series, The Greeks, and natureCRASHED.
