Trying to Find My Way
Reflections place several views in the same photograph: what is behind the glass, what is in front of it, and what we choose to notice.
Several images occupy the same space.
The photographs look through and across glass. A building interior, the street behind the camera, and reflections on the surface meet in one exposure.
The images are not double exposures. They record layers that were present at the same time but are easy to overlook.
What is there, and what do we see?
The work began with a question about perception. We take in more information than we can use, so attention selects the door, the destination, or the next step and filters out the rest.
Trying to Find My Way holds those competing views together long enough to look again.
The work continued.
Houston Press reviewed the series during FotoFest 2010 at Darke Gallery. New work from the series was shown at The Jung Center in 2014.
