Spacetaker
I founded Spacetaker because Houston artists needed practical support around the work: a way to be found, share resources, learn from one another, and reach audiences.
The first version was online.
Spacetaker began as an online portfolio space. It grew into a cultural arts guide with artist profiles, contact information, event listings, auditions, juried opportunities, and links to Houston arts organizations.
It was a service organization run by artists for artists and the people who supported them.
Then it became a place.
The work moved into Winter Street Studios and expanded through workshops, professional development, resource programs, exhibitions, performances, gatherings, and the Winter Holiday Art Market.
Spacetaker worked across disciplines because the underlying needs were shared.
Houston was being seen differently.
In its September 21, 2008 issue, The New York Times Magazine included Spacetaker in a national survey of emerging cultural cities, identifying ‘David Brown’s Spacetaker, an arts resource center in the Winter Street Studios.’
The recognition made visible outside Houston what artists here already understood: the city had the creative energy, and Spacetaker was building connective infrastructure around it.
Fresh Arts carried it forward.
In 2012, Spacetaker merged with Fresh Arts Coalition to form Fresh Arts. The organization continues to help Houston artists build knowledge, find resources, connect with communities, and create momentum for their work.
